Art Setouchi 2022 in its 5th and twelve year created various exchanges.
In the hillside village of Takamishima Island as one of the venues of Art Setouchi, a woman of the islander ran a hospitality place. She had visited one of the artworks I designed, "House of Toilet", on Ibukijima island and knew my friends of the island. The art festivals have created exchanges between islands that were originally unconnected. That has developed into a network of many islands and volunteers who often went to support the art festival.
It also brought exchanges between an island and companies. Fritz Hansen renovated an old house in Honjima island with a population of 200 and opened an antenna shop. It was the effect of the art festival. The port was lined with the Swan Chairs for waiting by them. What port in the world has the Swan Chairs in a waiting area?
The reason why elementary school was reopened on Ogijima was because people moved there after the art festival started and opened cafes. The student café in the school and the school building tour with screening of a heartbreaking movie created by students and teachers were the most fun on Ogijima island this year. The student who guided was an immigrant from Tokyo.
I created one architecture in this art festival, and exchange with the islanders started, because, unlike ordinary construction work, many islanders are involved in the art festival. This time a familiar fisherman's boss invited me to dinner. He went out fishing that day and caught me some seafood.
Unfortunately, there weren't many artworks that connected islanders and visitors, and visitors to each other. Most are arts for visitors as spectators. The only interactive art was Rintaro Hara + Yu Hara's Ping Pong Sea. Playing ping pong with strangers on a 6-person ping pong table was quite fun.
