In Kharkiv, the masterpieces of "Constructivism", which fascinated the world in the fields of architecture and art, exist.
The avant-garde art movement "Constructivism" flourished under the Russian Revolution in the 1910s and 20s.
The famous one is a complex facility of a university and a government office in Freedom Square located in a new city area (see the 1st photo). A long building borders the arc square.
The motif is an American skyscraper. It was the largest building in the world at that time. It is marvelous because instability and unbalance are the characteristics of constructivism. Meanwhile, the design of this enormous building was symmetrical. In 1928 of completion, authoritarian Stalinism had been emerging. Symmetry as an expression of authority would be a compromise to come to terms with power for the city's symbolic architecture?
Compared to that, the Central Post Office (1927) shows the youthfulness of constructivism.
The following is the Cultural Center for Railroad Workers (1932).
Kharkiv survived four urban battles with Germany during World War II. I wish Kharkiv to survive again.
